Curriculum Updates                 Paper folders came home today!

Technology Update from Mrs. Kortas

Reading: We continue our reading journey through Number the Stars. The girls are really understanding and appreciating the sacrifices Annemarie's family is making to support her friend Ellen. We also completed the "mythological creature" bracket for our own version of March Madness. Our next bracket is judging parts-of-speech using a chosen criteria. This is a fun way to analyze words!

Math: We completed our first mini-unit on fraction computation. We are continuing to practice the order of operations in math expressions. The girls have enjoyed this type of solving and review of basic facts.

Language Arts: We are preparing for a peer interview project. The girls will interview an assigned fourthie and write a descriptive article about her. They will use the fourthie's photograph to create a magazine-style cover to accompany the article.

Social Studies: We are taking notes from the historical fiction novel Ranger: Long Road to Freedom. We are working towards a Civil War project "museum exhibit".

Curriculum Updates

Reading: We began our next novel, Number the Stars. We learned a little bit about WWII and Denmark to prepare our minds for the setting of the novel. We also began a "mythological creature" bracket for our own version of March Madness. The girls had to choose criteria to judge the creatures and move them through the brackets. They are reading about various creatures and explaining their thoughts in the choices of which creatures advance.

Math: We began our fraction unit. This week we covered decomposing and adding/subtracting like denominator fractions. A mini-unit on the order of operations was also started. The girls have enjoyed this type of solving and review of basic facts.

Language Arts: We completed our poetry blossoms for a spring display. We were also able to do some writing outside on these gorgeous days! The girls have started a new "Unlock the Rainbow" challenge. Ask your daughter which part they are working on!

Social Studies: Our Civl War unit continues with learning about the Emancipation Proclamation, the eventual end of the war, and the Reconstruction Era. We also take notes from the historical fiction novel Ranger: Long Road to Freedom.

Curriculum Updates

Reading: This week the girls practiced and performed one of three readers theater scripts. They did a wonderful job of reading with fluency and expression!

Math: We wrapped up our geometry unit with an assessment Wednesday. We reviewed our papers as a class Thursday to see what questions or misunderstandings could use some extra practice. This discussion is so valuable for both of us! When we return from break, we will begin our fraction unit.

Language Arts: This week we jumped into writing poetry! The girls wrote acrostic, shape, color, haiku, and rhyming poems on paper blossoms to glue onto painted branches for a lovely hall display. On Thursday, for Wordly Wise Dress-Up Day, the girls used their costume pictures to make slides with clues about their word. Check out these creative slides!

Social Studies: Our Civl War unit continues with learning about the Emancipation Proclamation, the eventual end of the war, and the Reconstruction Era. We also take notes from the historical fiction novel Ranger: Long Road to Freedom.
