Curriculum Updates

Reading: We finished Ranger in Time: Rescue on the Oregon Trail. Facts from the novel were used to work on a mini-project to supplement the westward expansion unit. The girls could choose from creating a wagon with supplies, drawing a 1850 America map, or drawing the Sacagawea coin. We were able to add excellent social studies related facts to our notes for a future, end of unit project on westward expansion in the 1800s.

Math: We are currently working on 2 by 2 digit multiplication.  We are tightening up the process of solving and checking our work. A digital Thanksgiving Escape Room is making solving math extra fun!  We finished our "Leaping Numbers" challenge! We analyzed 20 different number patterns to discover a final mystery number.

Language Arts:  We finished up our Macy's Day Parade balloons. As they finished, the girls were able to work on their favorite writing activity: QUICK WRITES. These are opportunities for the girls to write about any topic in any format. Their creativity really shines in these stories!

Social Studies: We are continuing our work on the timeline of the westward expansion of the United States in the 1800s.  Students are in small "wagon train" groups. These groups are analyzing texts, having discussions, and considering options together as they "travel" westward.

Curriculum Updates      Papers came home today!

Reading:  We are continuing the Ranger in Time: Rescue on the Oregon Trail novel.  We are answering deeper level comprehension questions in writing.  We are also adding social studies related facts that are mentioned to our notes for a future project on westward expansion in the 1800s.

Math: We are working on 2x2 digit multiplication. Time is being spent gaining accuracy, confidence, and independence. We also started a daily "Leaping Numbers" pattern challenge. Esti-mysteries are such a hit and a great way to incorporate many math skills, so we are doing more of those.

Language Arts:  We wrote letters to our 8th grade buddies and look forward to their responses! Our Macy's Day Parade balloons are under way! We have typed persuasive essays and are now crafting the balloon for a fun hallway display.

Social Studies: This week, we analyzed maps of the United States territory acquisitions. As we "move" westward on our map, we are learning about the growth and labeling our map.  We added information to our notes for a future project a the end of the unit.

Curriculum Updates

Reading:  We are continuing the Ranger in Time novel.  We are answering deeper level comprehension questions in writing.  We are also adding social studies related facts that are mentioned to our notes for a future project on westward expansion in the 1800s.

Math: We are continue working on multiplication.  I am going over several strategies and am encouraging the girls to choose the one that works for their brain and gets them the correct answer!  Most prefer the traditional method, while some are utilizing the break-apart strategy.

Language Arts:  In writing, we learned about the history of the Macy's Day parade.  We reviewed old photos from its beginning in 1924.  We even saw what is in the lineup for this year's parade!  The girls had to think of a balloon that isn't included and give detailed reasons WHY it should be in the parade.  After typing their essay, they will create their balloon and set it against a New York skyline.  These will look amazing in the hall and will come home in a few weeks.

Social Studies: This week we learned about the Lewis and Clark expedition.  We added information to our timeline and notes for a future project.
