Today we enjoyed the Blessing of the Animals on the Green!

Check out some pictures in our "October" class photo folder!

This week's quote-of-the-week was "The potential for greatness lies within each of us."  We observed our friends all week for demonstrations of this quality in how they made others feel.  Our class nominated Audrey Mathers!

Curriculum Updates

Please review a technology update from Mrs. Laney Kortas.

Reading: We continue our reading of James and the Giant Peach. We are working on the skills of explicit information, inferences, and drawing conclusions through written response and peer discussion. We have noted the use of ellipses, dashes, and italics by Roald Dahl for emphasis on how to read the text. We also focused on the use of similes to help give the reader a vivid mental mental and support comprehension. Our goal is to try to experiment with these author techniques in our own writing.

Math: We are working on adding and subtracting large numbers using multiple methods. We are practicing the use of estimation as a way to check our work. There are pictures in the October photo folder of our fun number disc activity! Time in math is also spent working on a mystery to solve that reviews place value.

Language Arts:  This week we wrote a descriptive story. The inspiration was from a basic, bland sentence and picture. We discussed how to add detail, vivid vocabulary, and interesting verbs and adjectives. These are in the paper folder that came home today!

Social Studies: We reviewed the three branches, finished our "Road to the White House" mini-unit, and reviewed the basic process a person goes through to run for President. Next week, we will learn about the women's suffrage movement. I encourage the girls to think about what they are passionate about.....what do they feel needs change or support?
